What to look at when you compare red light therapy devices
Wavelengths
Most research on red light therapy uses red light around 630–660 nm and near-infrared around 810–850 nm. More wavelengths is not automatically better. What matters is whether the device covers the red and near-infrared ranges you need. Our wavelengths guide explains what each range is used for.
Irradiance
This is the light power that reaches your skin, in mW/cm². Brands measure it at different distances (0, 3 or 6 inches), so two figures are only comparable when the distance matches. Read irradiance explained before treating a big number as a better device.
Coverage
A mask covers the face, a belt covers one body area, and a panel covers whatever you stand in front of. Pick the format first, then compare specs within it. If you are unsure, start with LED masks vs panels or take our device quiz.
FDA status
"FDA-cleared" means the FDA reviewed the device for a specific use, such as wrinkles or hair loss. "FDA-registered" only means the company is listed with the FDA. Most devices on Amazon state neither.
Price range
We show a price range instead of a price because Amazon prices change daily. Use the "Check price on Amazon" button for the current price.
For a step-by-step method, see how to choose a red light therapy device.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the specs in this comparison come from?
Every spec comes from the manufacturer's own Amazon listing. When a brand does not publish a figure, such as irradiance, the table shows a dash instead of an estimate. Irradiance values are manufacturer claims and have not been independently measured by us.
Why don't you show prices?
Amazon prices change often, sometimes several times a day. Instead we group devices into four price ranges, from budget ($) to top tier ($$$$). The "Check price on Amazon" button always shows the current price.
How are the scores calculated?
The six scores (ease of use, coverage, intensity, versatility, portability and value) are our editorial ratings from 0 to 10. They are based on each device's published specs, its format and its price range, so devices of the same type and price get comparable scores.
Is a device with more LEDs or more wavelengths better?
Not necessarily. LED counts are not always comparable, because some brands count individual chips and others count beads that hold several chips. Most studies use red (630–660 nm) and near-infrared (810–850 nm) light, so a device that covers both ranges is a better starting point than the one with the longest spec list.
Which devices are FDA-cleared?
Several masks (including Shark CryoGlow, Nanoleaf, RENPHO, MICEYLIVE, Solawave and Therabody), the Solawave wand, and most laser hair devices (iRestore, Capillus, Theradome and HairMax) state FDA clearance on their listings. They carry an "FDA-cleared" label on their cards, and the "FDA status" row in the table shows it for every device.
Can I compare devices of different types?
Yes. You can compare a mask with a panel, for example, and the table shows both. It is most useful within one type, though, because coverage and session length differ a lot between formats.
